VR Laboratory
Since January 2020, the working group "Dynamics of Chemical Processes" of the Institute of Chemical and Electrochemical Process Engineering at the SWZ has been operating a VR laboratory. With the help of a Senior Fellowship of the Stiftverband für Deutsche Wissenschaft, won by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wehinger, students are now able to understand the mostly complex relationships between geometry and target variables such as turnover, heat transfer or pressure loss in the course "CFD in Process Engineering". In addition to the use in the course, the VR laboratory is also available for the research carried out by the working group. This uses simulations to improve the efficiency and sustainability of chemical processes and reactors. Special attention is paid to the interaction of local transport phenomena and local kinetics.
Technical specifications
The VR lab is equipped with two permanently installed workstations and a notebook which can be used as a mobile VR station for presentations at conferences/fairs or within the university. The generously equipped rooms offer the possibility of room-filling VR, whereby the geometric dimensions contribute to a better understanding of the geometry by a "real" walk through the scene. To ensure a smooth flow in the VR scene, the workstations are each equipped with a powerful CPU and a corresponding graphics card. Due to the installed main memory they are also suitable as simulation computers.
- Workstation 1:
CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-9700K CPU @ 3.60GHz (8 cores)
RAM: 32 GB
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060
VR: HTC Vive + Controller+ Base stations for room-filling VR
Resolution: 1080x1200 pixels per eye
Status: Installed permanently
- Workstation 2:
CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-9700K CPU @ 3.60GHz (8 cores)
RAM: 32 GB
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060
VR: HTC Vive + Controller+ Base stations for room-filling VR
Resolution: 1080x1200 pixels per eye
Status: Installed permanently
- Mobile workstation:
CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-9750H CPU @ 2.60GHz (6 cores)
RAM: 16 GB
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Mobile
VR: HTC Vive + Controller+ Base stations for room-filling VR
Resolution: 1080x1200 pixels per eye
Status: mobile useable
Installed software
The commercial CFD software Simcenter STAR-CCM+ from Siemens PLM Software in the version 14.04.011-R8 is installed on the computers. Within this software the VR scene can be created and opened with Simcenter STAR-CCM+ version 14.04.011.
Virtual Reality Lab opened with a poster party
Innovative teaching methods in process engineering are well received by Clausthal Master students.
